In the past, there were laws in the United States that made it legal to separate people based on their race. This was called de jure segregation. Even after these laws were changed, some people still separated themselves from others based on race. This was called de facto segregation. It wasn't until the 1960s that the United States started to end segregation and treat everyone equally.
